CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Handsome as always, he approached wearing jeans and a simple shirt. His sheriff's car was nowhere in sight.

One of my pet peeves is a guy bringing soon-to-be dead flowers to express love. “I didn’t wanna look like your boss picking you up.” He explained as he held out a small pot of flowers. He left them intact so they wouldn’t wilt.

I set it on the porch with plans to tend to them later. “I haven’t been on a date in so long that it had never really occurred to me to buy another car. But I figured it would be a pleasant walk for us. You know my house isn’t far.”

I tried to think of how I could weasel out of this date, with so many looming questions and the bombshell of him being a Witch Hunter. I didn’t know if going out with him was the right call. I looked him in the eyes, trying to see what my uncle saw, but all I saw were normal crystal blue eyes.

None of this made sense to me. Wouldn’t he have harmed Vivian and Cal? And even Uncle was unsure of his motivations. I took a deep breath. Maybe because I had lost my magic, he couldn’t tell I was a witch. Perhaps this could be used to my advantage. I just had to calm down and stop my heart from racing like mad.

“And if I don’t wanna walk?” I asked, teasing him.

“Then I’ll carry you.” Dammit! Why did he have to be so freaking perfect and hot?!

“Would you put me on your back and let me ride you… wait, that came out wrong all wrong.”

“We can do that too.” He held out his arm, and I couldn’t believe I had calmed my nerves enough to hook my arm in his. We still couldn’t stop laughing at my blunder. And now I was so confused. No conclusion jumping until I had solid proof. Would Vivian know he was a witch hunter? She would have seen the mark, but honestly, I bet she was in the dark as much as I was. Like I said, they were supposed to be extinct. Another thought had entered my mind. Tito mentioned that Mrs. Hamby aided someone who was investigating the incident. It would make sense for this case to draw a witch hunter.

We settled in for a nice, quiet walk along the lake. I couldn’t help but note how beautiful it was. How the setting sun was turning the lake many colors warm and serene. The weather was the right type of cool, not enough to need a coat while still chasing off the heat. The weather here was always lovelier than on the mainland.

“I’ve always wondered how this place got the name Devils Lake?” Johan broke our silence. “I assume they’re talking about this lake. I don’t recall seeing another one in this town. The name is so ominous for a place so beautiful.”

“Rumor has it an actual devil is living at the bottom of the lake.
